Welcome to A Free Faith, the professional website of Christian Schmidt. That’s me, over there on the right, enjoying a gorgeous day out in the snow. This site is both blog and a home for some of my burgeoning ministry.
The name “A Free Faith” is taken from the work of the Unitarian (later Unitarian Universalist) theologian James Luther Adams. It is, I think, a tremendous description of liberal religion. We are free—free to choose, free to be, free from artificial constraints of dogma or creed— but also bound by our faith to certain commitments—to love our neighbor, to make a better world, to live our lives as if everything we do matters. We are both free and not free at the same time. This is a vital concept for liberal religionists, and one that this site aims to explore.
